An Evening with Jonathan Crayford

19 March 2024
Tristan Hoare is delighted to welcome internationally renowned pianist and composer Jonathan Crayford to the gallery for an evening of musical intervention during Antoine Wagner's exhibition, Maria Callas.

Jonathan Crayford and Antoine Wagner met at the InCadaqués Photo Festival in 2018. Their first collaboration occurred during the Nuit Blanche in Paris when Wagner presented his video project Silva Improbabilis on the facade of the National Archive. Crayford streamed in from New Zealand, improvising to the digital ecosystem.

The unique language that they have developed in the synaesthesia between sound and image made it evident to improvise around Maria Callas.

Jonathan Crayford has garnered many awards over the past four decades and is celebrated internationally as a pianist and composer. He’s noted for his work with Kurt Rosenwinkel, David Murray, Groove Collective and Afro/Cuban NY-based band Mambo Macoco along with many others including film soundtracks. His music according to one critic “leaves you gasping at its beauty, richness and assuredness”.

“A huge talent, Jonathan is a true original who explores creative musical opportunities, when or wherever they might arise. I consider him to be one of the very finest creative musical talents to have ever come from Aotearoa.”

Jonathan wishes to thank MW of Ronnie Scott’s.

The musical event will be accompanied by martinis by Alessandro Palazzi of the Duke's hotel featuring No.3 gin by Berry Bros. & Rudd.
