Matthew Lutz-Kinoy (b. 1984) lives and works in Los Angeles and Paris. The artist holds a multifaceted practice, swaying from painting to poetry, theatre performance to ceramics. He makes playful ceramic sculptures and large-scale paintings that represent and respond to the human body.
Lutz-Kinoy’s ceramics are influenced by working with artists in Europe and Brazil as well as the Japanese artist Natsuko Uchino. Certainly Lutz-Kinoy’s ceramics explore historical works and moments, drawing motifs and inspiration from Hispano-Moresque, Byzantine, Islamic and Korean ceramics. His artworks pay homage to the histories, traditions and techniques of representation while exploring identity, gender, visibility and pleasure. Craftsmanship, lightness and a pastel colour palette are characteristic of Lutz-Kinoy’s ceramics.
