Goudal’s work engages with expansive, worldly phenomena (both natural and man-made) but creates works that drift into our imaginations. Goudal constructs large-scale installations in abandoned and obsolete structures in locations around the world, such as brutalist buildings and dilapidated barns, working directly within the landscape and sometimes inserting photographic backdrops into a scene, which she then photographs and enlarges into life-size prints. She uses traditional chromogenic Lambda printing, adding a nostalgic element to compositions that are at once stark, romantic, and uncanny. In addition to her photography, she makes video work that is thematically linked to her photos.

Goudal’s work finds itself at the intersection between reality and fantasy. Her practice is an investigation into photographs and films as dialectical images, wherein close proximities of truth and fiction, real and imagined offer new perspectives into the photographic canvas. The artist questions the potential of the images as a whole through landscape installations. Goudal has long been drawn to the meeting point of nature and culture, or as she puts it, the organic as “invaded” by the man- made. Goudal also combines elements of theatre in her work in the series Les Amants (the Lovers), in which Cascade plays a part. The photograph is a staging where the photograph plays the main role and real nature is relegated to best-supporting actress.
