Parme Baratier (b.1972) is a French painter, printmaker and bookmaker who focuses on the natural world. Born in La Ville Rose, Baratier now lives and works in Paris, living between nature and his studio.
From his first memory of a beach at just five year’s old, Baratier’s obsession with botany – and its subsequent presence throughout his work – has never subsided. Aided by his travels, studies and all-round fascination for the presence of nature’s beauty within our everyday lives, his work aims to highlight the ways in which it is not only crucial to be faithful in the representation and observation of nature but, according to Baratier, one must also listen to its poetic language.
In order to create some of his own botanical prints, Baratier grows the plants in his own garden, harvest them and then fuses them together to create a canvas, before printing a photographic image of that same plant. Baratier also uses plant-derived ink and completes each work with his signature symbol. His relationship to plants and understanding of the fabric of the paper give each work a unique feel and texture.
